Scruton Sky at Night

Some interesting astronomical events to look out for in January. On the 4th we may see a Lunar occultation of Saturn.

On 4 December we’ll see Venus and a thin crescent Moon low in the twilight sky: look SW. On the 13th the Moon skims under the Pleiades (mentioned last month).

With BST over we can now look forward to darker skies.

The night sky is getting darker! Darkness is broken down into Civil, Nautical and Astronomical ‘periods’, which vary over the year.

Comets/Meteors – The ‘Perseid’ meteor shower will ‘peak’ around the 11 – 13th August.

A Total Eclipse of the Sun and a UK Partial Eclipse

Orion continues its dominance, but Leo begins to dominate in the south.

Light pollution of our sky is measured on the ‘Bortle Scale’, a score of 1 being the darkest sky through to 9 for an inner city. Scruton scores 4.
